What is a hyaluronic acid injection?

Hyaluronic acid injections (dermal fillers) have become an essential part of anti-ageing treatments. Due to its endogenous origin, hyaluronic acid is already widely used in skincare products and offers natural looking results when used topically.27,69,96

What happens when one goes to a practitioner for an hyaluronic acid injection? 27,31,97

During the first consultation with a practitioner, s/he will discuss our treatment expectations and will perform a detailed examination to identify which areas need to be treated. After this, s/he will recommend an HA dermal filler that is most suitable for you.

After the consultation, and if we are happy to continue, the practitioner will help us complete a medical history form and we will need to sign a consent form before treatment can begin.

During the injection, the practitioner will inject small amounts of an HA filler into our skin using usually a very fine needle. The injection session is quick, typically lasting between 15-30 minutes, depending on the areas treated. To help minimise any discomfort, HA fillers may also contain a pain killer.27,79,97

Following the injection, the practitioner will massage the area to smooth out any irregularities.Ice packs may be used to decrease swelling and pain, but these symptoms typically disappear within 1-2 days.27,79,97

State of the art fillers are designed to respect our facial expressions and the benefits can normally be seen instantly.29

Often the practitioner will apply a post-procedure cream on the injected area to reduce inflammation and redness and to improve skin discomfort.32,99

For an optimal and long lasting result, discuss with the practitioner when and if a follow-up appointment may be appropriate.
